Exciting new developments in the UK

for the teaching of reading and spelling in the English language

The British Government has recently changed its official guidance for teachers in how to teach reading and spelling in response to research and following a parliamentary inquiry and national review. The work of experienced teachers, trainers and programme designers has helped to convince the British Government that pre-schools and schools need to change reading instruction methods.

Phonics International

Debbie Hepplewhite’s synthetic phonics programme

The Phonics International programme is fully in line with the official guidance to teachers - based on research, best practice and Debbie’s personal teaching and training experience. It is designed to be particularly supportive for ‘teachers’ and ‘learners’ and to be used in ‘partnership’ between schools and parents as appropriate.

The programme is very informative, systematic and well-structured and provides colourful and enjoyable online audio-visual and paper-based resources. Guidance for teachers and/or parents is threaded throughout the programme and on every core Sounds Book Activity Sheets. Phonics International teaches The English Alphabetic Code comprehensively and the skills of reading, spelling and handwriting. When learners can read, Phonics International continues as a spelling programme providing several years’ work.
